woodland belle....
began like any other obsession.
Mai McKemy (first name pronounced May, like the month), has long had a fascination for all things nature. However, this interest
transcended the typical appreciation, and quickly became an all-encompassing muse, ever directing her creative train of thought. She attended college at Appalachian State University to study art, but secretly wondered, "what in the world will I do with this?" and, "how will this pay my bills?" and, most importantly, "how can I convince my parents that I'm really 'studying' up here?" These were weighty questions indeed--but luckily for us--Mai found her calling, somewhere between skipping class in favor of a walk on the parkway and late nights in the studio.
Mai's love for the natural world and all of its fascinating details has inspired every moment of her life; she never met a twig she didn't like, as her husband is well aware. After graduating in 2007, Mai plunged into making her dreams come true: creating lovely things, and living life to the fullest. She created The Sparrow's Nest and later, Woodland Belle, as an expression of her unique vision: to create innovative jewelry that captivates and inspires.
so, what is a woodland belle?
Blending sophistication with playfulness, Mai's idea of the woodland belle is that of the modern woman full of charm and refined
sensibilities, yet balanced with a rustic aesthetic and an acclamation for the natural world. Simply put, a woodland belle is beautiful; a
woodland belle is still a girl at heart, with a fire for discovery. She is bright and optimistic; she knows that there are still treasures to be found in the world.
Mai currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina with her singer/songwriter husband , where she works from her studio nestled in the beautiful blue ridge mountains. The
mountains provide ample inspiration for creating woodland themed jewelry and accessories. Each of her creations are made by hand,
one at a time, by Mai personally.
